Páger Kékfrankos: A Natural Red Wine from the Heart of Mátra

Páger Kékfrankos is one of the most successful and popular wines from Páger Pince, a winery based in Gyöngyöspata, in the Mátra region. Páger Pince is a small, family-owned craft winery built on an ecological, natural-wine philosophy, and this wine faithfully reflects that approach.

The Origins of Páger Kékfrankos: Gyöngyöspata and the Gereg Vineyard

The grapes come from the Mátra wine region, from Gyöngyöspata, and specifically from the Gereg vineyard. The wine is typically a blend of two clones — an Austrian clone (A4) and a Hungarian, Kecskemét-bred clone (K1/KT1) — which gives it a more complex, layered character.

Winemaking Style

The winery is committed to a natural approach: the wines are bottled unfiltered, unfined, with minimal added sulfur — or sometimes none at all — and fermented spontaneously. Aging mostly takes place in used oak barrels, which gently frames the fruit character without overpowering it.

Tasting Notes

Depending on the vintage, intense blue and red berry fruit — sour cherry, blackberry, blueberry — dominate, complemented by subtle spice, good acidity, and an elegant structure. Alongside the classic barrel-aged bottling, the winery has also produced a completely unoaked, crown-cap-sealed, chillable natural "fruit bomb" version for those who prefer an even lighter, fresher style.

Food Pairing

Thanks to its fruity character and lively acidity, this wine can pair beautifully with grilled meats, aged cheeses, and game dishes, while the lighter, chillable version works well for summer barbecues or light appetizers.
