Kolónia 52 Bleu de Hongrie: A Natural Kékfrankos from Szent György Hill

Kolónia 52 Bleu de Hongrie is a special Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch) bottling from Kolónia 52, following the finest traditions of natural winemaking. This handcrafted red wine is made as much as possible by human hands — and feet: the grapes go into the vat as whole clusters, processed by traditional foot treading instead of mechanical crushing.

How Kolónia 52 Bleu de Hongrie Is Made: Grapes, Feet, and Time

Fermentation begins spontaneously on its own, after which the wine ages for 11 months in used 600-liter oak barrels. This is a completely additive-free natural wine: no sulfites, no fining or filtration, and nothing added at bottling either. The recipe has only three ingredients: grapes, feet, and time.

Volcanic Terroir and a Distinctive Flavor Profile

Grown on the slopes of Szent György Hill through ecological (organic) farming, the grapes carry every characteristic of the Balaton wine region's volcanic soil. As a result, this Kékfrankos doesn't follow the usual jammy style — instead, it's an earthy, spicy Balaton red wine with fresh acidity and fine, restrained tannins.

The Winery Behind the Wine

The duo behind Kolónia 52, Annamária and Attila, farm just three small hectares. They build their wines not through accelerated processes, but with endless patience. Thanks to its lightness and purity, Bleu de Hongrie is an absolute favorite, and a perfect choice for everyday wine drinking.

If you enjoy Kolónia 52's volcanic, minimal-intervention wines, it's worth trying other Kolónia 52 wines as well — the same Szent György Hill terroir and cellar philosophy, in a different style. You can read more about the volcanic Szent György Hill wine region here.
