Páger Szürkebarát A Natural White and Orange Wine from the Heart of Mátra

Páger Szürkebarát is a standout white and orange wine from Páger Pince, a winery in the Mátra region working with a nature-focused, minimal-intervention approach. If you're looking for an exciting, layered, naturally-made Pinot Gris that truly reflects the character of the vineyards around Gyöngyöspata, this is exactly the wine you're after.

The Origins of Páger Szürkebarát: Old Vines from the Gereg Vineyard

The grapes are harvested in Gyöngyöspata, mainly from the old vines of the Gereg vineyard. The wine faithfully reflects Páger Pince's organic, minimal-intervention philosophy: harvest is often done in two passes, spread out over time, so that every grape reaches the press or vat at optimal ripeness.

Winemaking Technology

At the winery, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) is often fermented on the skins — resulting in the orange wine version — or given a shorter, traditional skin-contact treatment. Fermentation and aging take place partly in tank and partly in used or lightly toasted oak barrels, on fine lees, adding extra texture and complexity to the wine.

Style and Character

Thanks to skin contact, the wine often takes on an exciting "dawn-like," slightly copper or onion-skin hue. On the nose and palate, classic peach, tropical fruit, and pear notes are joined by creamy, beeswax aromas from barrel aging, along with the fine tannin structure and vibrant acidity typical of natural wines.

Winemaking Philosophy

Winemaker Mátyás Páger works without additives, relying solely on spontaneous fermentation and very low sulfur levels. The wines are mostly bottled unfiltered or only coarsely filtered, resulting in an honest, raw, terroir-driven final product.

Food Pairing

Thanks to its peachy, beeswax character and natural style, this wine can pair beautifully with spiced Asian dishes, roasted poultry, aged cheeses, or mushroom-based dishes.
