Out in Sopron, the historic red-wine region on Hungary’s western border, he farms old family vines with monk-level patience — no machines, no shortcuts, just soil, hands and time. His wines have made him one of the defining voices of contemporary Hungarian winemaking.

The Wetzer family has long roots in Sopron, a region shaped by small growers and meticulous, hands-on viticulture. Péter’s path began with a desire to reconnect with that heritage: reviving old family vineyards, seeking out forgotten or neglected parcels, and recommitting to the local hero grape, Kékfrankos. Along the way he shifted toward organic, low-intervention farming — cover crops, reduced inputs and a relentless focus on soil vitality.

In the cellar, the philosophy is one of minimal manipulation: native fermentations, gentle extraction and patient ageing, in the belief that transparency and precision come from simplicity rather than control. His wines whisper instead of shout, but the message lands — Sopron has soul. Expect earthy, structured, restrained reds with spice and real depth, and “zero makeup” honesty throughout.

The range runs from a crisp Zöld Veltelini and a textured Furmint to the flagship Kékfrankos and an elegant, cool-climate Pinot Noir — heritage varieties, handled with grace.
